Adult Social Care Law Training

Legal Framework Training

Illustration reading: Know The Rules!!!

My training on the legal frameworks of adult social care provides fully up to date legal knowledge explained clearly and straightforwardly. Practitioners are supported with applied examples which enable them to develop legal literate practice in their day to day roles. Participants find my courses interesting, stimulating and understandable.

I offer a wide range of courses covering the Care Act, Adult Safeguarding, Mental Capacity Act, Deprivation of Liberty, and Mental Health Law. See below for further details.

I prefer face to face delivery whenever possible, because it provides for the best learning experience for participants. However, all courses can also be delivered virtually via Zoom or MS Teams.

Bespoke Training

I am always happy to create bespoke courses to meet specific needs. All of my training is routinely adapted to the policies, documentation and context of each client. But I am also happy to create entirely novel courses to meet particular needs, such as ‘Ordinary Residence and s.117 for Forensic Social Workers’.

I am trusted and valued by a lengthy list of local authorities, NHS Trusts and Safeguarding Adults Boards to provide high quality, excellent value bespoke legal training to their staff which engages and empowers them as practitioners.

Testimonials

“I've really enjoyed the training- it was a refreshing approach to the law”

“The training was very engaging. Delivered in a manner which was not patronising and in an understandable language - for the law it's a difficult task. The quiz's were different to the breakout rooms and the discussions with colleagues were useful and thought provoking. Although via Teams it wasn't boring. Thank You”

“This is probably the best training that I have had. Yo was extremely knowledgeable and was able to give examples to cement the learning.”

“This has been the best training I have done in years. Yo is an excellent presenter, clearly highly knowledgeable in understanding of legal literacy and ability to translate it into real life scenarios. I will be asking all my team to sign up for this training and I feel confident in applying what I have learnt to my practice. Thank you again Yo - FANTASTIC training!”

“Excellent training - should be mandatory and longer! It will certainly inform my practice going forward”

“Thoroughly enjoyed the two days. Yo’s training style kept my interest and attention throughout.”

“Well presented. Clear, precise examples of practice. Yo extremely knowledgeable on law.”

Care Act, Human Rights and General Legal Framework Training

I offer courses in all aspects of the Care Act, including transitions and Ordinary Residence. I am also able to provide in depth training on embedding Human Rights in adult social care practice, including skill development in analysis and rationale writing.

One of my most popular courses is Legal Literacy for Adult Social Care. This is a unique and broad-based course covering key concepts, such as Duty of Care and Proportionality, as well as core duties under the Care Act, applied knowledge of the principles of the Mental Capacity Act and more.

Mental Capacity Law Training (including DOLS and Community DOLS)

I offer a wide range of Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty courses. These include a half day Introduction to the Mental Capacity Act, suitable for Children’s Workers or new staff, a half day DOLS overview, and full day training in undertaking Mental Capacity Assessment and Best Interests decision making for frontline practitioners.

I am also able to provide more advanced and specialist courses, including Applying to the Court of Protection to authorise Deprivation of Liberty in the community (Community DOLs), DOLS signatory training and BIA Refresher/Legal Update.

Mental Health Act Training

The Mental Health Act can be a complex area. I offer a non-specialist Mental Health Act course for frontline adult social care practitioners who are not AMHPs, which is designed to demystify the MHA and support participants in understanding when referrals for Mental Health Act assessment are and are not appropriate.

I am also able to provide more specialist training, particularly around s.117 (including funding responsibility). In a unique crossover, I also offer specialist autism training specifically for Approved Mental Health Professionals (AMHPs) and my resources include EasyReads on Mental Health Act assessment for autistic people.

Adult Safeguarding Courses

I offer a comprehensive range of adult safeguarding courses including Undertaking s.42 enquiries, Essential Legal Literacy for Adult Safeguarding, Chairing Safeguarding Meetings and Complex Cases in Adult Safeguarding. I also offer Legal Updates for Safeguarding Adults Boards. These courses are suitable for multi-agency staff from a variety of professional backgrounds.

Uniquely, across the Essential Legal Literacy and Complex Cases courses, I am able to provide specialist safeguarding practitioners with a comprehensive breakdown of all of the duties, powers and options available in all of the most challenging situations including self-neglect, adults who are not engaging, substance misuse, complex capacity issues, undue influence and more.
