In my experience there are two versions of autism. There is the textbook version and then there is real life.
Textbook
The textbook version of autism is all about social functioning. Autism is defined by diagnostic criteria – such as those in the DSM 5 and ICD 11.
Real life
In my experience this version of autism is all very well for diagnosing people, but it isn’t much help when you have an autistic person right in front of you and need to know how to help them access your service or organisation!
